Are there different types of Autism?

To clarify ... Autism IS NO LONGER categorised into 5 distinct types.

The understanding and classification of autism has evolved significantly over time.

Currently, the diagnostic manual (DSM-5) uses 'Autism Spectrum Disorder' (ASD) as a single diagnosis following assessment evaluation rather than by separate types.

The DSM-5 integrated all these conditions under the umbrella of ASD, recognising that autism exists on a spectrum with varying levels of severity and support needs.

The DSM-5 defines three severity levels for ASD based on the amount of support a person needs in two main areas:

* social communication

* restricted/repetitive behaviours

ASD is now categorised into three levels based on the amount of support a person requires:

ASD Level 1 (requiring support)

ASD Level 2 (requiring substantial support)

ASD Level 3 (requiring very substantial support)

People still ask about the different 'types' relating to historical categories that you might find on the internet or be informed by well-meaning people who are not up to date.
